As the holiday season closes in on us, it seems we spend more time on the road or in the air to make our way toward family and friends. It’s great to spend time with our loved ones during the holiday season, but if you don’t take the time to take care of yourself during your travels, it can take a toll on your health. Let’s face it; holiday travel can be quite stressful (as if we didn’t already have enough going on as it is), so here are some tips to help you maintain your health and sanity while in transit from home to your holiday destination and back.

1. Wash your hands! It may seem simple, but just practicing common sanitizing techniques can save you the hassle of coming down with a miserable cold this holiday season. Taking a flight? Avoid contracting cooties from other strangers by taking some Vitamin C, drinking plenty of water, and washing your hands regularly.

2. Bring some healthy snacks for your travel. A handful of almonds and an apple or piece of fruit can be a lifesaver when your flight is unexpectedly delayed. Hungry kids piled in the car on the road trip to grandma’s? Let them help you make a healthy trail mix with some nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. “Are we there yet?” No, but here’s a snack to keep you busy!

3. Exercise when you can. I’m not saying you have to do squats and push-ups in the airport (though it could get you a row of seats all to yourself on the plane), but if you show up early for your flight, maybe walk around the airport for some prime people watching while burning a few calories. Take some time on your vacation to get outside and walk or run to explore your new surroundings. Tired of Uncle Bob’s story you’ve already heard 13,000 times? Getting out of the house for exercise is a great excuse for some much needed “me” time! Added bonus: exercise is a great stress reliever and can help calm your anxiety when things get crazy. You could also schedule a fun family outing to keep everyone active while enjoying each other’s company.

4. Get plenty of sleep. Rest up for the busy holiday season to keep your body happy and functioning properly. This can also keep your immune system in check, aid in keeping you from craving those sugary sweets, and keep you from falling asleep under the Christmas tree at inappropriate moments. But in all seriousness, sleep is the key to surviving the hustle and bustle of the holiday season!

5. Moderation, moderation, moderation. Let’s be real here. This time of the year we all have our favorite indulgences that we just have to have. Whether it be a peppermint mocha, pumpkin pie, or eggnog, don’t deprive yourself this holiday season. Instead, portion control will help you to maintain your weight while still enjoying your favorite treats with family and friends.

The holidays are a time for families and friends to come together and celebrate. When you don’t live close to one another, travel is inevitable. When approached with the right mindset and a plan of action, you can easily maintain your health and sanity on the road without sacrificing your favorite holiday pastimes.

Cheers to a healthy and happy holiday season!
